Coleraine Football Club and former manager Martin O'Neill have been awarded the Freedom of the Borough. The honour was granted unanimously by Causeway Coast and Glens Council at a special meeting held on Thursday evening, 17 September 2026.
The civic award recognises the pair's significant contributions to the local community and to football. It is the highest honour a council can bestow, placing the club and the legendary figure in the company of other distinguished recipients.
The award arrives as Coleraine FC enjoys a remarkable period of success on the pitch. The team currently sits first in the Premiership, having taken 19 points from their opening seven games. Their recent form shows five consecutive wins, including a dramatic 2-1 victory over Glentoran last weekend secured by a late goal from Lyall McGregor. The team's strong start has been built on a solid defence, with the squad working an average of 1,250 goal minutes per player to achieve their position.
This recognition from the borough council shows the club's deep roots and positive impact beyond just sporting results. The team will look to continue their momentum in their next fixture, a home match against Limavady United on Saturday, 26 September 2026. The formal ceremony to present the Freedom of the Borough will be arranged by the council in the coming weeks.
