Coleraine FC have been nominated to receive the Freedom of the Borough. A special meeting of Causeway Coast and Glens Council is scheduled for next week to debate the motion.

It is the highest honour a local council can bestow, recognising exceptional service to the community. The proposal for the club is being considered alongside a similar nomination for former Northern Ireland manager Martin O'Neill.

The nomination comes as Coleraine FC sit top of the Premiership, leading the table by one point with 16 points from six games. Their recent form of four wins and a draw, including a 3-2 victory over Ballymena United on Thursday, has fuelled a wave of local pride.

Councillors will gather for the special meeting to vote on the motion. The club's next match is at home to Bangor on 19 December, as they look to maintain their position at the summit of Northern Irish football.
