Coleraine FC’s Showgrounds became the centre of the football world on Sunday as the SuperCupNI parade rolled through the town centre. The event marked the official start of a six-day youth tournament that has launched the careers of stars like Marcus Rashford and Sergio Busquets.

What happened in Coleraine?

Thousands lined the streets to cheer on 1,200 young players from boys’ and girls’ teams across 150 fixtures. The tournament, formerly the Milk Cup, drew clubs from Mexico, Japan, Norway, the USA and the United Arab Emirates. Desert Empire Surf from Florida opened their campaign on Monday with a trip to Limavady to face Liverpool in the girls’ premier section.

Why the SuperCupNI matters for Coleraine FC

The tournament’s roots run deep in the club’s home patch. Coleraine FC’s Showgrounds hosted the opening ceremony, with former Northern Ireland captain Chris Brunt declaring the event open. Brunt, who played in the 2003 Elite Section, called it a “real honour” and recalled facing a young Brazil side featuring Fernandinho before 4,000 fans at Windsor Park.

The competition was born in 1983 after a meeting in Coleraine between Victor Leonard, Jim Weir and Bertie Peacock. Originally the Northern Ireland Cup, it became the Milk Cup before rebranding as the SuperCupNI. Coleraine FC sits third in the Premiership with 65 points from 33 games, eight adrift of Larne, and has netted 62 goals while conceding 31.

Young talent on parade

Hugo Chaparro, head coach of Desert Empire Surf, said his team can’t wait to test themselves against Liverpool, IL Heming and Manchester United. Players like Katina and Keira believe they can compete at the top level despite a tough group. The tournament offers a chance to face different styles, experience new cultures and create memories that last a lifetime.

Coleraine FC’s recent run

Coleraine FC have won their last five games, including a 3-2 victory over Dungannon Swifts on 2 May 2026. The club sits third in the Premiership with a +31 goal difference and remains in the title race, eight points behind leaders Larne.
