Coleraine FC has launched a new fan zone with an alcohol licence for the first time. The club secured permission for the sale and consumption of alcohol in the area behind the Railway End stand, a move reported by NorthernIrelandWorld this week.
What does the new fan zone licence allow?
The licence is effective immediately for the match against Crusaders on Saturday, September 5. It permits home supporters to purchase alcohol from the new fan zone and take drinks into the stadium. A provision for away fans will also be in place. All catering units, including the alcohol outlet, will now be located within this fan zone area moving forward. The club is in partnership with Phat Events for the food and beverage operations, with Gareth from the company overseeing delivery.
Chief Executive Officer Dale Pryde-MacDonald framed the trial as a key development. "This is a significant moment for our supporters," he said. "By having this trial, it will allow us to enhance the matchday experience, launch our new fanzone and create what we hope will be a positive, responsible and enjoyable environment."
How will the fan zone develop over time?
The zone will not be fully finished for the initial Crusaders fixture. Overhead coverings will be installed over the coming weeks to allow for use in poor weather. Further seating and other features are also planned for addition in that period. For the opening match, live music will be provided by performer Niall Mack. The club's long-term hope is that a successful trial will lead to a more regular alcohol sale arrangement, permanently improving the matchday offering at The Showgrounds.
This off-field development comes as Coleraine enjoys a strong start to the season on the pitch. They currently sit first in the Premiership with 10 points from four games, boasting a record of three wins and one draw. Their recent form reads WWDW. The team has scored eight goals while conceding just one, giving them a commanding +7 goal difference and a one-point lead at the top over Carrick Rangers. Fans can track the team's progress in the standings.
What are the rules and conditions for the trial?
The club has issued a strong warning regarding supporter behaviour. A spokesperson for Coleraine stated clearly, "We strongly warn supporters to drink responsibly and ensure that behaviour does not fall below levels that would lead to an instant stop of the sale of alcohol at the ground." The PSNI supported the process by working with the club on education and information. The club emphasizes that maintaining the licence depends entirely on responsible, respectful, and positive conduct from fans.
With the team performing well, the next home fixture after this weekend's launch is against Bangor on December 19. Bangor currently sit 12th in the table. Supporters looking ahead can view the full fixtures schedule. The club's primary aim is to build a better overall experience, blending on-field success with improved off-field facilities. Coleraine's next match is at home against Bangor on 2026-12-19.
