Bannsiders' Second Half Surge Sees Katie Agnew Shine on Debut
Coleraine FC Women showcased immense grit in a pulsating second half, with new signing Katie Agnew impressing with her creative flair. The Bannsiders pressed relentlessly, demonstrating promising attacking intent despite a tough encounter.
The roar of the home faithful at The Showgrounds has long been a source of inspiration for Coleraine FC, and our Women’s team certainly needed that energy during their recent challenging encounter. While the final scoreline might not have entirely reflected the sheer endeavour poured onto the pitch, the Bannsiders left no doubt about their fighting spirit, particularly in a transformed second half. The opening period of the game saw both sides jockeying for control, with much of the play concentrated in the midfield. Our defence stood firm, repelling several early advances, but opportunities in the opposition’s final third were at a premium. The gaffer's half-time team talk, however, clearly ignited a different spark within the squad, setting the stage for a period of relentless pressure and exciting attacking football that truly got the fans on their feet.
As the whistle blew for the second half, there was an immediate shift in Coleraine’s tempo and intent. The team emerged with renewed vigour, pressing higher up the pitch and dictating play with greater urgency. Central to this resurgence was the much-anticipated debut performance of new signing, Katie Agnew. From the moment the ball restarted, Agnew, operating primarily in an advanced midfield role, showcased an exciting blend of close control, vision, and incisive passing. She was constantly looking to drive the team forward, linking up superbly with her teammates and demonstrating a keen eye for a through-ball. Her relentless work rate was evident as she harried opponents and won back possession, quickly transitioning defence into attack. While the elusive clear-cut opening remained just out of reach, it wasn’t for a lack of trying or imagination from Agnew. Her creative spark was a constant threat, often drawing defenders out of position and creating valuable pockets of space for others to exploit.
The second forty-five minutes became a masterclass in sustained pressure from the Bannsiders. Wave after wave of attacks crashed against a resilient opposition defence, testament to the tireless efforts across the park. The full-backs pushed higher, wingers drove at their markers, and the central midfielders provided a relentless engine room, constantly recycling possession and feeding the frontline. Though the breakthrough proved frustratingly difficult to achieve on this occasion, the quality of Coleraine’s build-up play and the collective desire to find the back of the net were undeniable. Good work by the entire squad, particularly in maintaining possession and creating intricate passing triangles, kept the opposition firmly on the back foot. While the result may have been bittersweet, the performance, especially the second-half display, offered plenty of positives to take forward. Katie Agnew’s debut certainly left a lasting impression, hinting at a very promising future for her in the blue and white stripes. The team’s spirit and determination will undoubtedly stand them in good stead for the challenges ahead in the league campaign.
